How To Protect Your Hardwood Flooring During The Festive Season

It may not be something that immediately crosses your mind; however, the festive season can be a bit of a risk to your beautiful hardwood floor! How can that be we hear you ask? Well, things like a real Christmas tree and increased risk of spillages can present some degree of challenge to keeping things looking shiny and new!

Christmas Trees

We all agree that there is just nothing quite like the scent and look of a real Christmas tree. However, they can present a challenge when it comes to your floor because of things such as sap, fine, sharp needles, and even constant watering.

When it comes to watering, if your tree gets too dry it can pose a fire risk, however, if you over-water there can be the risk of it overflowing and damaging your flooring. We recommend that you make use of an appropriate watering can with a long spout and do not overfill. A long spout will mean you can navigate the numerous presents that will undoubtably be underneath it.

In addition to this, you will want to regularly vacuum up any needles that may fall off so that they do not discolour your flooring. With a hardwood floor (particularly a polished one), you will need to make sure you do not accidentally scratch it when sweeping them up.

With regards to locating the tree itself, you may want to make use of a protective mat, however, we acknowledge that these can sometimes cause an eyesore and therefore it may be worthwhile considering a protective skirt instead. You will also want to make sure you do not slide the tree across the floor when moving it!

The last point to bear in mind is removing the tree when the festivities have finished! This is a particularly important point as it can often be the messiest part. You may want to make use of a specially designed sack that can go over the tree and protect your lovely flooring from damage!

Spillages

Whilst we probably do not need to worry too much about big Christmas parties this year, there will still be an increased risk of spillages as your chosen family and/or friends come to visit. Spillages of drinks such as water are not ideal, however, things like tea, coffee, and red wine can cause a problem when it comes to removing stains.

Even the best-behaved guests can pose a problem and we recommend having things such as paper towels, cloths, and floor spray handy so you can act quickly should a spillage occur. You will also want to make sure you have a selection of coasters within reach!

Enjoy Yourself

The last point is to make sure you enjoy yourself. Christmas can be a stressful time of year, however, we hope that you manage to get some respite and enjoy a bit of a break so you can recharge and be ready to take on all that 2021 brings!
